A 19-week pregnancy falls within the second trimester. Terminating at this stage is possible and can be safe — but it requires specialized care, trained professionals, and clinical supervision.
At Women for Women Kenya, we’re here to guide you with accurate, judgment-free information so you can make the best decision for your health and life.
❓ Why Do Some Women Seek Abortion at 19 Weeks?
While many abortions happen earlier, second-trimester abortions may happen due to:
- Delayed discovery of pregnancy.
- Health risks to the woman.
- Severe fetal abnormalities.
- Sexual violence.
- Change in life circumstances (financial, relationship, etc.).
We understand that every woman’s story is different. And every woman deserves care — not judgment.
⚖️ Is It Legal in Kenya?
Yes — Article 26(4) of the Kenyan Constitution permits abortion when:
- A trained health professional determines the pregnancy endangers the life or health (including mental health) of the woman.
- There is a medical emergency.
- There are fetal abnormalities.
We work with professionals who follow the law and put your safety first.
🩹 What Are the Safe Methods at 19 Weeks?
There are two main options, depending on your situation:
1️⃣ Dilation and Evacuation (D&E) – Surgical Abortion
- What it is: A procedure done by a trained provider under sterile conditions.
- How it works: The cervix is gently dilated, and instruments plus suction are used to remove the pregnancy.
- Pain relief or sedation is provided.
✅ Most preferred method for 15–24 weeks
✅ Quick (15–30 minutes)
✅ High success rate, short recovery
2️⃣ Medical Abortion Using Pills (Misoprostol ± Mifepristone)
- Used when surgical care is not accessible, or if the provider recommends it.
- How it works:
- Mifepristone 200 mg orally (optional)
- Followed by Misoprostol 400 mcg every 3 hours, vaginally or under the tongue
- This causes labor-like contractions to expel the pregnancy.
- Mifepristone 200 mg orally (optional)
🔺 Takes longer (12–48 hours)
🔺 More physically and emotionally intense
🔺 Must be done in a clinic or hospital, not at home
⚠️ Do Not Attempt Self-Abortion at 19 Weeks
Using abortion pills alone at this stage is dangerous.
It can lead to:
- Heavy bleeding.
- Incomplete abortion.
- Infection or sepsis.
- Uterine rupture.
- Death.
If you or someone you know is pregnant at 19 weeks and needs help, please seek professional care. Do not take misoprostol alone without supervision.
